1809 Long-Island Revival
The Christian’s Magazine offers a glimpse into a revival that occurred on Long-Island in 1809. We have no other information about this revival, other than these few key points:
► The revival took place among the Presbyterians (Synod of New-York).
► It was said to have occurred in Suffolk County, Long-Island, New York.
► A strong effort was made to communicate that extravagant behavior did not accompany this revival. By “extravagance,” it is assumed that the account referred to behaviors such as weeping, crying out, prostrations, which often accompanies revivals (see: 1801 Cane Ridge Revival).
► The revival impacted individuals across age groups but notably affected a higher number of elderly individuals, between the ages of 80-90, leading to their conversion.
► Many blacks were impacted by the revival.
► Over 300 people were added to the church during the year.
► The revival resulted in a noticeable reduction in vice and immorality, along with increased Sunday church attendance and observance of the day as a day of rest.
► Young people who joined the church displayed strong commitment to spiritual development.
► Prayer meetings saw high attendance.
► The moral transformation of society persisted for some time after the revival.
