Question: Do you know how to tell when Satan is lying?

Answer: Every time he moves his lips.

That well-known quip is an attempt to illustrate that Satan’s entire mode of operation is filled with deception and lies (Jn. 8:44; 2 Cor. 11:4; 2 Thess. 2:9). That is an accepted fact embraced by all evangelically oriented Christians. Even so, this doesn’t mean that he and the evil spirits (demons) under his command are incapable of telling the truth.

This post attempts to show that the quip used above is exaggerated, and that Satan can and does use truth in some of his communications.

While serving as missionaries overseas, or while ministering here in the USA, we exercise great caution while expelling demons, because when they speak [like with Jesus’ experiences], there may be truth in what they say, but often it is intermingled with deception, lies and attempts to intimidate.

1 Samuel 28:12-19: Nine Truths Spoken by An Evil Spirit

1. The demon truthfully indicated King Saul’s identity.
2. The Lord has left you.
3. The Lord has become your enemy.
4. The Lord has done just as he said he would.
5. He has torn the kingdom from you and given it to your rival, David.
6. The Lord has done this to you today because you refused to carry out his fierce anger against the Amalekites.
7. The Lord will hand you and the army of Israel over to the Philistines tomorrow.
8. You and your sons will be here with me [dead].
9. The Lord will bring down the entire army of Israel in defeat.

Job 1:9-10: Three Truths Spoken by Satan

1. Acknowledged the truth that God had a wall of protection around Job.
2. Acknowledged that God made him prosper.
3. Acknowledged the truth about Job’s wealth.

Mark 1:24: Three Truths Spoken by a Demon

1. Jesus was interfering with these evil spirits.
2. They are going to be destroyed. This was a truth of their future.
3. They acknowledged the truth that Jesus was the Holy One of God.

Mark 3:11; Luke 4:41: One Truth Spoken by Demon(s)

1. The evil spirits always confessed the truth that Jesus was the Son of God.

Mark 5:7-12: Six Truths Spoken by the Demons

1. The demons spoke the truth that Jesus was interfering with them.
2. The demons spoke the truth that Jesus was the Son of the Most High God.
3. They confessed the truth that Jesus had the power to torture them.
4. They said their name was Legion [Jesus did not contradict what they said].
5. They acknowledged that Jesus had the power to send them to a distant land.
6. They acknowledged that Jesus had the power to force them into the pigs.

Luke 4:6: One Truth Spoken by Satan

1. All the kingdoms of the world were Satan’s to give to Jesus.

Acts 16:17: Five Truths Spoken by the Demon in the Slave Girl

1. These men [they were men].
2. Servants of the Most High God [they were God’s servants].
3. Acknowledged their God was the “Most High”.
4. Who are proclaiming [they were preachers].
5. They proclaimed the way of salvation [this demon spoke truth].

Acts 19:15: One Truth

1. The demons said they didn’t know the seven sons of Sceva [didn’t recognize their authority].
