With our modern age’s reluctance to preach on the damning power of sin and the imperative need for repentance, it should come as no surprise that revival is being withheld.
There is only one prescription for revival, and it is found in 2 Chron. 7:14. The last principle in that verse deals with sin – which in this verse is referred to as “wicked ways.”
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Wicked Ways – What does that mean?
The word “wicked ways” in 2 Chron. 7:14 means any sin or behavior that displeases God. If we are sincere in our pursuit of God for a revival, we will want him to reveal anything in our lives that is offending him or quenching His Spirit. (Ps. 139:23-24)
Biblical Model for Revival
If biblical revivals were to be studied, it would be observed that prior to the revival occurring, there was a thorough destruction of idols and anything that was displacing the worship of God. For us to see revival we must do the same.
The Destruction of Idols in Biblical Revivals
1. Jacob and his family (Gen. 35:2)
2. Israel at Sinai under Moses (Ex. 32:20)
3. Israel at Shechem under Joshua (Josh. 24:14)
4. Israel under Gideon (Judges 6:25)
5. Israel at Mizpah under Samuel (1 Sam. 7:3)
6. Assyrians at Nineveh under Jonah (Jonah 3:8)
7. Judah under Asa (2 Chron. 15:8)
8. Judah under Hezekiah (2 Kgs. 18:4; 2 Chron. 29:5)
9. Judah under Josiah (2 Kgs. 23:4; 2 Chron. 34:3-4)
