Consideration #3: Porn in the Pulpit & Pews

Church Leaders Addicted to Pornography
Consider the silence in churches about the sinful plague of pornography. It is destroying marriages, families, and lives, and has crippled the body of Christ. Even among ministers of the Gospel this sin is widespread.

Pastors and other church leaders know this is a major problem confronting the body of Christ, among both men and women, yet only 7% of churches have a plan to do something about it.* Why the neglect?

Why has there been complacency in confronting this sinful pandemic? Why is it that we have allowed this sin to infiltrate and pollute the body of Christ?

Is the neglect due to our acceptance of it in our culture, and so we accept it among ourselves, in the body of Christ, of which Christ is the head? Is it because we have come to terms with it and said, “Yep, that’s a problem,” yet nothing is done to fix the problem?

Do most church leaders remain silent about this marriage- and life-destroying sin because they know dozens of people who sit before them each Sunday have that addiction, and they don’t want to make them feel like they are being focused on if they address the topic, even if they use the most loving approach possible?

Or is the topic ignored because the very leaders who should address the situation are in bondage to it themselves, and do not have the spiritual power to do anything about it?

Isn’t it obvious that sexual sins are demonic, and have more power to control a person than all other sins, except for witchcraft?

Consider the Spiritual Dynamics
Is it true that there is a protective covering provided to a congregation by their leaders? Is it also true that when the leaders of a church are in bondage to pornography that it spreads through the entire congregation (1 Corinthians 5:6)?

Is it also true that the protection provided for a congregation by church leaders is very powerful, which acts like an umbrella of God’s protection, and that the spiritual leaders hold that umbrella?

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit (Hebrews 13:17)

What happens when spiritual leaders become addicted to something as demonic as pornography? Does that umbrella fold up, exposing the congregational members to the same sinful bondage?

Is it possible for addicted church leaders to have any spiritual power from God undergirding and enhancing their prayers or preaching? Is that the reason why 70% of Christians believe that church leaders should step down if they are addicted to porn? *

Is it true that gifts and graces of spiritual leaders are often transferred to those under them? Is it also true that the weaknesses are too?

How many times in the Bible have we been given a command to run from a certain sin? Here is one verse we found:

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body (1 Corinthians 6:18).

Is there any disagreement that pornography is demonic to the core? The most demonized people we have dealt with are those who have had sexual addictions. Just because the secular culture embraces and applauds sexual sin, that doesn’t mean we should. We must do all we can to pull that viper out of us and out of our church family. Pornography is a major barrier blocking revival. It is possibly the most serious issue facing preachers of the Gospel today.

Freedom from Addiction
Some have said that there is no answer to the problem of pornography addiction. Others have said that counseling will help, but it may take 1-2 years before a person can be set free and walk in total victory.

Freedom Can Be Instantaneous
What we have found is that freedom is available through the power found in the name of Jesus, and it doesn’t take 1-2 years. We have seen people set free instantly.

Until the Church addresses pornography from a spiritual and biblical worldview, and helps people gain freedom from that addiction, it will continue to destroy marriages, lives, and churches, and will continue to be a major barrier to revival.
