I Sold My Soul to the Devil

We regularly meet with people who have “sold their soul to the Devil,” that is, they have made a pact with Satan. In exchange for some favor, they give Satan legal rights to their entire being, not merely their soul.

Is it possible that Christians have unwittingly done the same? When they have the attitude of “don’t bother Satan and he won’t bother you,” isn’t that a pact with Satan?

You may also hear that same sentiment spoken with this veiled phrase:

We don’t talk about Satan around here because we don’t want to give him any credit.

Here are a few questions about that view:

  1. The Bible says we have an enemy prowling about looking to devour people (1 Peter 5:8). If you never warn congregational members about this vicious enemy, how will they ever know he is there? How will they know how to protect themselves?
  2. God commands us to clothe ourselves with His armor (Ephesians 6:10-18). Why would He command us to do that if we are assumedly immune to demonic attacks? What is the purpose of that armor? Is there a literal Satan shooting arrows at us all the time or not? If it is impossible for those arrows to harm the Christian, then the strong warnings about “staying alert” and “standing guard” have no purpose.
  3. If we never talk about the enemy of our soul, our accuser, the one that is continually enticing us into sin, how will the Christian ever be able to stand victorious?

Break the Pact with Satan
Satan will never keep a promise. You may think he will leave you alone if you leave his kingdom alone. Don’t be so naïve to believe such a thought.

Satan is a destroyer. He hates you and should be shown no mercy. He will never cease his attacks on you, so don’t fall for the lie that he may make an exception with you and not attack you or your family if you stop overtly working and praying to destroy his kingdom.

The Victor is Our Focus
Some may argue that we should keep our eyes on Jesus. We agree, because it is only through faith in Him that we can overcome (1 John 4:4; Revelation 12:11). So, as we engage the enemy of our soul, we must keep our eyes on Jesus, whose purpose for coming to the earth was to destroy Satan’s works (1 John 3:8).

And remember, the powers of Satan will be active in the world till the end of the age, when Satan will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10).
