Deliverance Ministry: What Guides Our Beliefs, Experiences or Biblical Doctrines?

Some critical perspectives might dismiss deliverance ministry as irrelevant or erroneous, implying that the experiences of its practitioners primarily shape their beliefs. However, a foundational principle for anyone engaged in deliverance ministry is the assertion: “My experiences do not formulate my beliefs; rather, my experiences confirm what I have previously concluded from Scripture.”

It is essential for this, and every type of ministry, to maintain a solid grounding in the Word of God, as the Bible serves as the ultimate authority for all Christian beliefs and practices (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Despite this, the work of the Holy Spirit sometimes involves encounters and phenomena not explicitly detailed in Scripture. This document explores how to understand and respond to such experiences while remaining firmly rooted in biblical truth.

The Bible, while providing foundational spiritual understanding, leaves many questions unanswered about the spiritual realm, even acknowledging that God intentionally limits our full comprehension. As 1 Corinthians 13:12 (AMP) states, “For now [in this time of imperfection] we see in a mirror dimly [a blurred reflection, a riddle, an enigma].”

Deliverance ministry engages the spirit realm directly, and those involved often encounter occurrences that defy not only scientific explanation but also direct biblical examples.

Unexplainable Occurrences

When confronted with strange and unusual spiritual phenomena, the challenge arises: should one disregard these events, or ignore them simply because they lack explicit biblical explanation or alignment with established theological viewpoints? Consider occult practices, for example; they are filled with spiritual manifestations not directly mentioned in the Bible, yet these occurrences are widely reported and reinforce the belief of witches, sorcerers, and others in an active spirit realm. To address these perplexing experiences, we will first review phenomena the Bible does mention and then examine those frequently encountered in deliverance ministry that are not explicitly found in Scripture.

What the Bible Does Mention

  1. Two out-of-body experiences (Ezekiel 8:3; Acts 8:39-40; 2 Corinthians 12:2).
  2. Demons speaking through a person’s vocal cords (Mark 5).
  3. Demons inhabiting the physical body and soul of people (Mark 16:9).
  4. Demons exhibiting superhuman strength through the person they inhabit (Mark 5:3-4; Acts 19:13-16).
  5. Demons afflicting people with disease (Job 2:7).
  6. Spirits of infirmity afflicting people with physical deformities (Luke 13:16).
  7. Demons afflicting people with mental torment (1 Samuel 16:14-23).
  8. Specific demon names (e.g., Legion, Python, Beelzebub, Abaddon, Apollyon, Azazel) (Mark 5:9; Acts 16:16; Matthew 12:24; Revelation 9:11; Leviticus 16:10).
  9. Demons demonstrating their presence (manifesting) through screaming, foaming at the mouth, or writhing on the ground (Luke 9:39; Acts 8:7).

What the Bible Does Not Mention

Individuals experiencing the following phenomena have often been examined by licensed medical and mental health professionals and found to have no underlying physical or mental illness, yet these occurrences persist:

  1. Tattoos with evil associations, when anointed with oil and prayed over, result in demonic manifestations.
  2. Revulsion toward sacred objects like the Bible, crosses, or anointing oil, coupled with an impulse to flee or physically harm those nearby when being prayed for.
  3. Demon names (e.g., Jezebel, Leviathan, Baal) revealed by demons speaking through a person, beyond those explicitly named in Scripture.
  4. The ministry candidate’s voice changing in tone, speaking with a foreign accent, or speaking a different language never learned by them (xenoglossy).
  5. Abrupt and collective changes in room temperature (extremely cold or hot).
  6. The ministry candidate hearing demons conversing among themselves from within their mind.
  7. A demon speaking through a candidate, revealing hidden knowledge about a person present that the demonized individual could not have naturally accessed (claircognizance).
  8. Unpleasant odors, often sulfuric in nature, without a physical source.
  9. Ministry candidate writhing like a snake, with their tongue darting in and out.
  10. Extreme physical contortions of the body, coupled with violent tremors and facial distortions humanly impossible to replicate.
  11. Eyes becoming entirely black or rolling up into the head.
  12. Levitation.
  13. Flickering lights, inexplicable electrical disturbances during prayer sessions, and sudden drops in room pressure creating a “heavy” or oppressive atmosphere.
  14. Hauntings of locations, including phantom footsteps, opening/closing cupboard doors, rattling dishes, sounds of voices and children laughing, rocking chairs, or objects moving locations.
  15. Demons afflicting ministry candidates during deliverance sessions with sudden sleep, paralysis, lethargy, headaches, fogginess of vision, bodily pain, nausea, ringing ears, or an inability to read the Bible or say the name “Jesus.”
  16. Demons occasionally or continually speaking within a person’s mind (sounding like an auditorium full of people, or voices like children laughing and playing).

The Challenge

What should a deliverance team do when encounters do not fit neatly into direct biblical accounts or common theological categories? How can these team members remain true to biblical principles without denying the reality of what they are witnessing?

1. Prioritize Biblical Truth as the Ultimate Authority:

…..• The Bible is Central: Reaffirm that Scripture, as God’s inspired Word, provides the foundational framework for all spiritual understanding, encompassing God’s nature, human nature, and the character of both divine and evil spirits.

…..• Discernment is Key: Filter every experience through Scripture. When faced with phenomena lacking explicit biblical precedent, avoidance is not an option; instead, the Holy Spirit’s discernment becomes paramount.

…..• Learn from Others: Seek guidance from godly men and women with a proven track record of faithfulness, consecration, and success in this ministry, learning how they have navigated similar situations.

2. Humbly Acknowledge Mystery and One’s Limited Knowledge:

…..• The Bible does not explain every detail of the spiritual realm or every type of spiritual encounter. Our human understanding remains finite (1 Corinthians 13:12).

…..• God is sovereign over all creation, both visible and invisible. There may be phenomena we do not fully grasp within His vast domain.

3. Address the Occurrence While Staying Within Biblical Principles:

…..• Maintain the core principle: “My experiences do not formulate my beliefs; rather, my experiences confirm what I had previously concluded from Scripture.”
